Gateway Garden

Opportunities for greening abound in Sacramento! Here’s a little story about what can happen with a little effort – Gateway Garden! Last October I toured the amazing Tanama Garden and found out Always Growing Foundation had an opportunity a block from where I live to create a community garden on a vacant lot! I put out some flyers, met a bunch of neighbors, and we started planning. We gathered cardboard and got wood chips dumped to sheet mulch the area, neighbors brought out drip tubing and hoses and plants and seeds – even some dahlia tubers from SF. It really took off when Kaspian from Bike Party rode up and asked if he could help!

Kaspian got more volunteers from Bike Party, donations from the Co-op, and we got planting. Now there are way more tomatoes, peppers, and squash than we can eat, and we just keep meeting more people as we give them away. We’ve used the space as a meeting point for Bike Party Community Garden tours, and everyone compliments the transformation of the space. If you want to get involved with Gateway Garden – contact me (info@sacparkcity.com or phone below) or come out on a Tuesday evening. If you don’t live nearby but want to start something, I bet we can help you – let us know what project we can start with you!
